Christopher Columbus set sail on his first voyage on August 3, 1492. This significant expedition was sponsored by the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon. Columbus embarked on his journey with three ships: the Santa Maria, the Pinta, and the Niña. His mission was to find a new route to Asia by sailing westward across the Atlantic Ocean, but instead, he encountered the islands of the Caribbean and subsequently reached the islands of the Americas. This voyage marked the beginning of European exploration and colonization of the Americas.
