Nalanda College, Biharsharif is a college in Bihar Sharif, the district headquarters of Nalanda District in Bihar state in India. It is a constituent unit of Patliputra University.It was established in 1870 and is one of the oldest colleges of north India. Its catchment area includes nearby villages and small towns in Bihar Sharif. The Government of India issued stamps with its picture in 1970 on 27 March to mark its centenary. This college offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in science, commerce and arts.

27 March - United States Navy founded 1794

 

On March 27, 1794, the United States Navy was founded. This establishment came about as a result of the Naval Act of 1794, which was signed into law by President George Washington. This act authorized the construction of the first six ships of the U.S. Navy, marking the formal creation of the naval force of the United States.

 

27 March - Explorer Juan Ponce de Leon sights North America 1513

 

Juan Ponce de León, the Spanish explorer, indeed sighted North America on March 27, 1513. He is known for exploring and naming Florida while searching for the legendary Fountain of Youth. Ponce de León's expedition marked one of the earliest European explorations of what is now the continental United States.

Rajyogini Dadi Janki, passed away on 27 March 2020, was an Indian spiritual leader. She headed the Brahma Kumaris movement, the world's largest spiritual organisation run by women.

27 March - Sant Tukaram Beej left for heavenly abode

 

Sant Tukaram Beej is believed to be the day when Sant Tukaram left for heavenly abode. In 2024, the date of Sant Tukaram Beej is on March 27. It is observed on the second day of the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of moon) in the Falgun or Phalguna month (February – March) as per traditional Marathi calendar. On the day, devotees gather at temples and at sacred places at noon and perform various rituals as a mark of respect to great Bhakti saint.

Vithoba Temple at Dehu in Maharashtra is the home town of Sant Tukaram Maharaj and thousands of people pay respect to Sant Tukaram here on the day.

It is popularly believed that Sant Tukaram left his body on the forenoon of the second day in Falgun Krishna paksha in 1650 AD.

One of the greatest exponents of the Bhakti cult in Marathi culture, Sant Tukaram is worshipped by millions of people around the world and people take inspiration from his poems and teachings.

Department of Post issued a commerative stamp on Engineers India Limited (EIL) on 27 March 2015

Engineers India Limited (EIL) is an Indian public sector engineering consultancy and technology licensing company.It was set up in 1965 with the mandate of providing indigenous technology solutions across hydrocarbon projects.Over the years, it has also diversified into synergic sectors like non-ferrous metallurgy, infrastructure, water and wastewater management and fertilizers.
EIL is headquartered at Bhikaji Cama Place, New Delhi. EIL also has an R&D complex at Gurgaon, a branch office at Mumbai, regional offices at Kolkata, Chennai, Vadodara, inspection offices at all major equipment manufacturing locations in India and overseas offices in London (England), Milan (Italy), Shanghai (China), Abu Dhabi (UAE).

EIL has a wholly-owned subsidiary Certification Engineers International Limited (CEIL). It has set up a joint venture company namely Ramagundam Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited (RFCL) for enhancing the presence in fertilizers sector.

As of March 2021, EIL has more than 2400 engineers & professionals in its employee base of over 2800 employees.

Navratna status was accorded by Government of India in 2014.

On 27 March 2015, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee presented with the prestigious Bharat Ratna Award by President Pranab Mukherjee.

27 March - Philatelic Society of India stamp issue in 1997 by India Post

 The Philatelic Society of India (PSI) was formed in 1897 by a group of, mainly, expatriate Englishmen resident in the country as the first all-India philatelic society. During its first fifty years the society included most of the important Anglo-Indian philatelists and had a particularly strong publications record with two award-winning books. The society meets every first and third Saturday at the Mumbai G.P.O.

The idea of an all-India philatelic society arose at the Philatelic Society of Bengal in 1896 and an open letter was published by Charles Stewart-Wilson in Calcutta calling for expressions of interest.[2] The first meeting took place at 6 Middleton Row, Calcutta on 6 March 1897 where Charles Stewart-Wilson was appointed the first President and Lady Collen, Professor O.V. Muller and Major C.H.I. Hopkins were each appointed Vice-Presidents. The first Treasurer was Wilmot Corfield and the Secretary Mr. P. Aylwyn Selfe of the Bank of Bengal.

Most of the original members were Englishmen. Mr. C.K. Dutt, of Calcutta, the first Indian, was admitted in 1907.

In March 1957 an exhibition was held in Bombay to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of the society and in 1997 the Society celebrated its centenary with a display in Bombay titled Centipex '97 at which a red Scinde Dawk and other rarities of Indian philately were exhibited.India Post also issued two commemorative stamps to mark the centenary on 27 March 1997.

27 March - Royal Charter transfer of Bombay from Charles II to the East India Company

 

 

Royal Charter of 27 March 1668, led to the transfer of Bombay from Charles II to the English East India Company for an annual rent of £10. Sir George Oxenden became the first Governor of Bombay under the regime of the English East India Company. Gerald Aungier, who became Governor of Bombay in July 1669, established the mint and printing press in Bombay and developed the islands into a centre of commerce.
