14 January - Frederick IX death anniversary

 


 

Frederick IX (11 March 1899 – 14 January 1972) was King of Denmark from 1947 to 1972.Born into the House of Glücksburg, Frederick was the elder son of King Christian X and Queen Alexandrine of Denmark. He became crown prince when his father succeeded as king in 1912. As a young man, he was educated at the Royal Danish Naval Academy. In 1935, he was married to Princess Ingrid of Sweden and they had three daughters, Margrethe, Benedikte and Anne-Marie. During Nazi Germany's occupation of Denmark, Frederick acted as regent on behalf of his father from 1942 until 1943.Frederick became king on his father's death in early 1947. During Frederick IX's reign Danish society changed rapidly, the welfare state was expanded and, as a consequence of the booming economy of the 1960s, women entered the labour market. The modernization brought new demands on the monarchy and Frederick's role as a constitutional monarch. Frederick IX died in 1972, and was succeeded by his eldest daughter, Queen Margrethe II.

14 January - Prof. D.B. Deodhar born 1892


 Prof. D.B. Deodhar (1892 - 1993) was popularly known as the grand old man of Indian Cricket. he was the oldest first class cricketer at the time of his death and was the last of the cricketers who made their first class debut before the first World War, in the year 1911-12. He was a solid right-handed middle-order batsman. He was Vice President of the BCCI and was also a national selector. He was President of the Maharashtra Cricket Association since its inception. Deodhar Trophy, a limited over inter-zonal competition played in Inda since 1973, is named after him. He played 81 matches with a run of 4522 (average 39.32) and a higest score of 246; 11 wickets; 70 catches.

14 January - Chintaman Dwarakanath Deshmukh birth anniversary

 


Chintaman Dwarakanath Deshmukh, commonly known as C. D. Deshmukh, was an Indian civil servant and the first Indian to be appointed as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Here are his birth and death details:

C. D. Deshmukh played a crucial role in India's economic development and financial policies. Apart from serving as the Governor of the RBI, he also held various key positions in the government, contributing significantly to the economic and financial landscape of the country.

 

14 January - Charan Paduka Massacre in 1931

 


On 14 January 1931, on the day of Makar Sankranti (a religious festival), a crowd gathered on the Charan Paduka ground of Singhpur village of Chhatarpur district to protest in a non-violent manner against the rising taxation of the Colonial government. The British Army, led by their political agent Fisher opened fire on the peaceful meeting, leading to the death of 21 people and injuring another 24 people. Those martyred in the firing included freedom fighters like Seth Sunderlal Waroha of Pipat, Chiru Kurmi, Halkai Ahir, and many others. Several others were jailed after this incident. 

As the Charan Paduka ground is on the banks of the Urmila river, it is said that several people jumped into the river while being shot, thus turning the water red. History remembers this event as the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre of Madhya Pradesh.


14 January - Defender of the Motherland Day in Uzbekistan

 


Defender of the Motherland Day in Uzbekistan is celebrated on January 14th. This day honors the bravery and dedication of the Armed Forces of Uzbekistan, as well as the contributions of individuals who have served in the defense of the country.

On 14 January 1992, the Armed Forces of the Republic of Uzbekistan was established. This is considered to be the official holiday of the Armed Forces. Before this, Uzbekistan as part of the Soviet Union recognized Soviet Army and Navy Day as the armed forces official holiday. Following the fall of the USSR, some former republics of the Soviet Union such as, Russia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Kazakhstan continued to celebrate Soviet Army and Navy Day as Defender of the Fatherland Day. On 29 December 1993 the Uzbek Parliament established the Day of Defenders of Motherland to commemorate the anniversary of the establishment of the country's armed forces in 1992.

14 January - Flag Day Georgia

 

Flag Day in Georgia is celebrated on January 14th. This day commemorates the adoption of the national flag of Georgia. The current national flag, known as the "Five Cross Flag," was officially adopted on 14 January 2004.

The flag features a white field with a large red cross that extends to the edges of the flag. In each of the four corners, there is a smaller red cross. The design is symbolic and has historical significance. Flag Day is observed with various events and activities that celebrate the national identity and unity of Georgia.

14 January - National Forest Conservation Day in Thailand

 


National Forest Conservation Day in Thailand is celebrated annually on 14 January . This observance is officially recognized by the government, but is not observed as a holiday.

In November 1988 southern Thailand suffered from disastrous floods that were caused by a combination of factors, including forest destruction. In order to prevent further destruction of forests, Rama IX (the King of Thailand) signed two executive decrees that empowered the Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives to order the termination of logging concessions. The decrees were signed on 14 January 1989.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperative proposed to proclaim 14 January National Forest Conservation Day and observe it annually. On 09 January 1990 the Cabinet approved the proposal. The main objective of this observance is to raise public awareness of the importance of forest conservation to minimize global warming and prevent floods and other natural disasters.

In honor of National Forest Conservation Day the Royal Forest Department launches a tree planting campaign. Everyone can get free saplings at a plant nursery station and plant a tree to help combat deforestation and global warming.

14 January - The clarinet is invented

 


The first true reed instrument was invented on January 14, 1690 by Johann Christoph Denner in Nuremburg, Germany. It was a new instrument in its time called the clarinet. It evolved from an earlier instrument called the chalumeau, but by adding two keys it increased the instruments range. Mozart was the first composer to use a clarinet in a symphony.

The clarinet in 1690 looked a lot different than today’s model because it only had two keys and later three, but it was an improvement over the chalumeau and soon it was heard in orchestras everywhere. The clarinet may get  its name from ‘clarini,’ which was the new instrument orchestras were talking about because of the difficult runs and jumps it could do that would be impossible on a trumpet.

14 January - Armed Forces Veterans’ Day India

 


Armed Forces Veterans Day will be celebrated on the 14th of January. The 14th of January is commemorated as Armed Forces Veterans Day as a mark of respect and recognition for the services rendered by Field Marshall KM Cariappa. He was the first Indian Chief of the Indian Army. He retired from service on 14 January 1953.

Armed Forces Veterans Day is observed to reiterate the resolve of services for the well being of veterans and assure them that their valuable suggestions are always welcome.

 

14 January - Dashrath Manjhi mountain man

 

Dashrath Manjhi (14 January 1934– 17 August 2007), also known as Mountain Man, was an Indian laborer from Gehlaur village, near Gaya in the state of Bihar. When his wife died in 1959 due to injury caused by falling from a mountain and due to the same mountain blocking easy access to a nearby hospital in time, he decided to carve a 110 meter-long (360 ft), and 9.1 meter-wide (30 ft) wide path and 7.7 meter-deep (25 ft) path through a ridge of hills using only a hammer and a chisel.After 22 years of work, Dashrath shortened travel between the Atri and Wazirganj blocks of Gaya district from 55 km to 15 km.He travelled to New Delhi to get recognition of his work and was rewarded by then Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar. In 2016, Indian Post issued a postage stamp featuring Manjhi.
