09 October - Ratan Tata death

 


Ratan Tata, born on December 28, 1937, in Mumbai, is an iconic Indian industrialist and philanthropist. He is the former chairman of Tata Sons and Tata Group, one of India's largest and oldest conglomerates. A graduate of Cornell University with a degree in architecture and structural engineering, Tata also completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.

He became chairman of Tata Sons in 1991 and led the group to global prominence, overseeing major acquisitions such as Tetley (UK), Jaguar Land Rover (UK), and Corus (Netherlands). Under his leadership, Tata Motors developed the Tata Nano, the world’s most affordable car.

Tata stepped down as chairman of Tata Sons in 2012, passing on the leadership, though he remains an influential figure in the company as Chairman Emeritus. Beyond business, he is deeply involved in philanthropic activities, particularly in education, rural development, and health. He received numerous accolades, including India's second-highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan, in 2008.

09 October - Immanuel Sekaran birth anniversary

 


Immanuel Sekaran was a prominent Tamil freedom fighter and social activist known for his contributions to the Indian independence movement. He was born on October 9, 1924, in Paramakudi, Tamil Nadu, India, and tragically lost his life on September 11, 1957.

Immanuel Sekaran played a significant role in advocating for the rights of the oppressed and marginalized communities, particularly the Devendrars (also known as Pallars) in Tamil Nadu. He fought against social discrimination and worked tirelessly towards their upliftment.

One of the most notable incidents in his life was his involvement in the 1957 Keezhvenmani massacre. In an attempt to demand fair wages and better working conditions for agricultural laborers, including the Dalits, a violent confrontation occurred in Keezhvenmani village, Tamil Nadu. Immanuel Sekaran was one of the leaders of this movement. Tragically, he and 44 others, including women and children, were killed when the police and landlords opened fire on the protesters.

Immanuel Sekaran is remembered as a martyr for his tireless efforts in championing the rights of the marginalized and oppressed sections of society. His legacy continues to inspire social activists and Dalit rights advocates in Tamil Nadu and across India.

He was one of the leaders who organized a public meeting in Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar, to protest against repressive British laws. The British colonial administration, under the command of General Reginald Dyer, responded by ordering troops to open fire on the peaceful gathering, resulting in hundreds of innocent deaths and injuries.

Kitchlew's activism and leadership in the freedom struggle continued throughout his life. He was associated with various political organizations, including the Indian National Congress, and actively participated in campaigns for India's independence from British colonial rule.
