06 May - The Penny Black used in 1840

The Penny Black is the world's first adhesive postage stamp used in a public postal system. It was first issued and available for sale in Great Britain on 1 May 1840, but was not valid for use until 6 May 1840. It features a profile of Queen Victoria.

In 1837, British postal rates were high, complex and anomalous. To simplify matters, Sir Rowland Hill proposed an adhesive stamp to indicate pre-payment of postage. At the time it was normal for the recipient to pay postage on delivery, charged by the sheet and on distance travelled. The Penny Black allowed letters of up to 1⁄2 ounce (14 grams) to be delivered at a flat rate of one penny, regardless of distance.

06 May - International Drone Day 2023

International Drone Day is an annual event celebrated on the first Saturday of May every year. It was created to increase awareness and educate people about the positive uses of drone technology, as well as to encourage people to embrace this emerging technology. The event also seeks to bring together enthusiasts, pilots, and manufacturers to showcase their drones and share knowledge about their uses.

The first International Drone Day was celebrated in 2015, and since then, the event has grown in popularity around the world. It is celebrated in many countries and is organized by various drone enthusiast groups, organizations, and individuals.

The event features drone demonstrations, exhibits, and workshops where attendees can learn about drone technology, its uses, and regulations. The event also provides an opportunity for drone enthusiasts to come together and connect with each other.

One of the main objectives of International Drone Day is to promote the positive uses of drones. Drones are now being used in various industries, including agriculture, construction, and filmmaking. They are also used in search and rescue missions, disaster relief, and environmental monitoring. By showcasing these positive uses, the event helps to change the perception that drones are only used for negative purposes such as spying or causing damage.

International Drone Day also provides an opportunity for manufacturers to showcase their products and innovations. Many drone manufacturers and retailers use the event to launch new products, offer discounts and promotions, and get feedback from users.

Another significant aspect of International Drone Day is the promotion of safety and responsible use of drones. The event seeks to educate the public about drone regulations, including the need to register their drones, follow flight restrictions, and fly safely. It also provides an opportunity for drone pilots to learn about safe flying practices and the potential risks associated with flying drones

FCBD was created as a way to introduce new readers to the world of comic books and to promote local comic book shops. The event is supported by major comic book publishers, such as Marvel, DC Comics, Image Comics, and others, who produce special FCBD editions of popular titles or introduce new titles on the day of the event.

The free comic books are usually available in limited quantities, so many comic book shops encourage customers to arrive early to get their hands on the most popular titles.
