On January 24, 1950, the Constitution of India was adopted by the
Constituent Assembly. Dr. Rajendra Prasad, who was the President of the
Constituent Assembly, signed the Constitution, marking the official
adoption of the Constitution of India. The adoption of the Constitution
on January 26, 1950, also declared India as a sovereign democratic
republic. Since then, January 26 is celebrated annually as Republic Day
in India.
