11 January - The Naval Dockyard in Bombay

The Naval Dockyard in Bombay (now Mumbai) is one of India's oldest and most significant maritime establishments, with a history that dates back to 1735 when it was established by the British East India Company. Initially built to support the British colonial navy, the dockyard became a critical center for shipbuilding, repair, and maintenance, playing a pivotal role in the maritime operations of the British Empire. Over the centuries, it expanded its capabilities, constructing wooden and later steel-hulled ships, solidifying its reputation as a premier shipbuilding facility in the region.

On 11 January 1951, the Naval Dockyard transitioned into the administrative control of the Indian Navy, marking a significant milestone in India's post-independence efforts to modernize its maritime infrastructure. This transfer symbolized the country's commitment to self-reliance in defense and shipbuilding. Today, the dockyard is an essential part of the Indian Navy's Western Naval Command, providing state-of-the-art facilities for the construction, repair, and maintenance of naval vessels, including aircraft carriers, submarines, and frigates. It has supported the readiness of the naval fleet during critical moments in India's history, such as the 1971 Indo-Pak War, and continues to play a vital role in enhancing the nation’s maritime capabilities.

The dockyard’s legacy extends into the modern era, working alongside entities like Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) on advanced projects, including the construction of stealth frigates and submarines under the Make in India initiative. This integration of technology and innovation ensures that the dockyard remains a cornerstone of India's naval defense strategy. Its evolution from a colonial facility to a symbol of Indian maritime strength exemplifies the country's journey towards naval self-sufficiency and its growing prominence on the global stage.

The cover was released on occassion on  its 250th Anniversary on 11 January 1985, marking a momentous milestone in its long and illustrious history.
