09 October - Immanuel Sekaran birth anniversary

Immanuel Sekaran was a prominent Tamil freedom fighter and social activist known for his contributions to the Indian independence movement. He was born on October 9, 1924, in Paramakudi, Tamil Nadu, India, and tragically lost his life on September 11, 1957.

Immanuel Sekaran played a significant role in advocating for the rights of the oppressed and marginalized communities, particularly the Devendrars (also known as Pallars) in Tamil Nadu. He fought against social discrimination and worked tirelessly towards their upliftment.

One of the most notable incidents in his life was his involvement in the 1957 Keezhvenmani massacre. In an attempt to demand fair wages and better working conditions for agricultural laborers, including the Dalits, a violent confrontation occurred in Keezhvenmani village, Tamil Nadu. Immanuel Sekaran was one of the leaders of this movement. Tragically, he and 44 others, including women and children, were killed when the police and landlords opened fire on the protesters.

Immanuel Sekaran is remembered as a martyr for his tireless efforts in championing the rights of the marginalized and oppressed sections of society. His legacy continues to inspire social activists and Dalit rights advocates in Tamil Nadu and across India.
