Viswanathan Anand become the first Asian to win the FIDE
World Chess Championship, but the event took place in Teheran (also
spelled Tehran), Iran, in 2000. The championship match occurred between
Viswanathan Anand and Alexei Shirov, and Anand emerged as the winner,
claiming the title on 24 December 2000. This victory marked a historic
achievement in chess, establishing Anand as the first Asian to become
the World Chess Champion.
