Sonia Gandhi, born Edvige Antonia Albina MÃ ino on 09 December 1946, is an Italian-born Indian politician and the widow of Rajiv Gandhi, who was a former Prime Minister of India. After the assassination of her husband in 1991, Sonia Gandhi initially remained away from politics. However, she later became involved and assumed a prominent role in the Indian National Congress (INC), the political party to which her husband and mother-in-law, Indira Gandhi, belonged.
Sonia Gandhi has served as the president of the Indian National Congress, one of the major political parties in India, for several terms. She played a crucial role in the party's leadership, particularly during challenging times. Under her leadership, the Congress party achieved success in the 2004 and 2009 general elections, leading to the formation of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government with Sonia Gandhi initially choosing not to become the Prime Minister.
