V. G. Suryanarayana Sastri, born on 6 July 1870, was Professor of Tamil at the Madras Christian College, was the first person to campaign for the recognition of Tamil as a classical language.
He was a renowned Indian historian and epigraphist. He dedicated his life
to the study and interpretation of ancient inscriptions and historical
texts, particularly those from South India. Sastri's work made
significant contributions to the understanding of the region's history,
culture, and literature.
