Senegal achieved independence from French colonial rule on
04 April 1960. This significant event marked the end of colonial
administration and the beginning of self-governance for the people of
Senegal. After independence, Senegal became a sovereign nation, with
Leopold Sedar Senghor as its first President. April 4th is celebrated
annually in Senegal as Independence Day, commemorating the country's
liberation from colonialism.
