New Mexico was admitted as the 47th state of the United States on
06 January 1912. Prior to becoming a state, New Mexico was a territory
acquired as a result of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the
Mexican-American War in 1848. The path to statehood involved a lengthy
period during which New Mexico functioned as a territory, and it
eventually achieved statehood in the early 20th century.
