Elamkulam Manakkal Sankaran Namboodiripad, commonly known as E. M. S. Namboodiripad or EMS, was born on 13 June 1909, and passed away on 19 March 1998. He was a towering figure in Indian politics, particularly in Kerala, and a prominent Marxist theorist and historian. EMS was one of the founding members of the Communist Party of India (CPI) and later played a crucial role in the formation of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)]. He made history by becoming the first Chief Minister of Kerala in 1957, heading the first democratically elected communist government in the world. His tenure was marked by significant land and educational reforms aimed at reducing social inequalities and improving the quality of life for the poor.
