21 March - Human Rights Day (South Africa)

Human Rights Day in South Africa is observed annually on March 21st. This day commemorates the Sharpeville Massacre, which occurred on March 21, 1960. During the Sharpeville Massacre, police opened fire on a peaceful demonstration against apartheid pass laws in the township of Sharpeville, resulting in the deaths of 69 unarmed protesters and the injury of many others.

Human Rights Day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought against apartheid and for human rights in South Africa. It also reaffirms South Africa's commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights for all its citizens.

On Human Rights Day, various events and activities take place across South Africa, including memorial services, marches, cultural performances, and educational programs. The day provides an opportunity for reflection on the country's history, progress made in advancing human rights, and the ongoing challenges faced in achieving equality and justice for all South Africans.
