02 May - World Tuna Day

World Tuna Day is observed on May 2nd each year. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2016 to raise awareness about the importance of tuna and to promote sustainable fisheries management practices to ensure the long-term conservation of tuna stocks.

Tuna is a significant marine resource that plays a crucial role in the economies, food security, and cultures of many countries around the world. It's a highly valued fish species that supports livelihoods in coastal communities and provides a vital source of protein for millions of people globally.

On World Tuna Day, various events, campaigns, and educational activities are organized to highlight the importance of sustainable tuna fishing practices, the conservation of tuna populations, and the need to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. It's also a day to celebrate the cultural significance of tuna and to promote responsible consumption of seafood to ensure the health of our oceans and marine ecosystems for future generations.
