The Komagata Maru sailed from Hong Kong to Vancouver on 28 March
1914. It arrived in Vancouver's Burrard Inlet on 23 May 1914,
carrying passengers mainly from the Punjab region of India who were
seeking to immigrate to Canada. However, they were denied entry by
Canadian immigration officials under the discriminatory Continuous
Passage Regulation. This event led to a prolonged standoff between the
passengers and the Canadian government, ultimately resulting in the ship
being forced to return to India in July 1914.
