The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) was established on July 16, 1929. It is an autonomous organization under the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India.

ICAR serves as the apex body for coordinating, guiding, and managing research and education in agriculture and allied sciences across India. Its primary objective is to promote and support agricultural research and development to enhance agricultural productivity, sustainability, and rural livelihoods.

ICAR operates through a network of agricultural research institutions, agricultural universities, and other allied organizations across the country.
